An Immersive, Experiential Learning Community for Veteran & Military-Connected Students
The Syracuse University Veteran & Military Learning Scholars Program (SU-VMLSP) is a cohort-based scholars program housed within the Center for Health Behavior Research & Innovation (CHB) and the IVMF Veteran & Military Behavioral Health Collaborative.
Designed for students interested in veteran and military studies, including student veterans, military-connected students, and those with lived experience or professional interests in this field, the SU-VMLSP offers immersive, cohort-based learning grounded in interactive seminars, hands-on research experiences, and meaningful community engagement. Scholars participate in structured educational programming, collaborate on active research projects, and connect with university and VA partners while developing academic expertise, professional confidence, and a strong sense of belonging. The program provides a structured pathway for students to build expertise, professional identity, and community within the growing field of veteran and military studies.
The Three Pillars of the Scholars Program
- Interactive Learning in Veteran and Military Studies
SU-VMLSP Scholars attend a dynamic, discussion-driven seminar experience grounded in veteran and military studies. Scholars engage in interactive learning designed to deepen understanding of veteran and military behavioral health while strengthening essential academic skills.
Through structured seminars, Scholars build:- Research literacy and analytic reasoning
- Critical thinking and applied problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of veteran and military behavioral health
- Professional communication and presentation skills
- Immersive, Hands-On Research Experience
The SU-VMLSP places Scholars at the center of active research in veteran and military studies, where they collaborate on real-world projects with faculty and VA partners.
Current project areas include:- Systematic Reviews & Evidence Synthesis
- Veteran & Military Behavioral Health Survey Research
- Large National Dataset Acquisition & Analysis
- Science Dissemination & Knowledge Translation
Scholars gain direct experience in data analysis, literature review, and scientific writing. They regularly translate their work into conference presentations at local and national venues, building early professional momentum as emerging scholars.
