Four Cross-Cutting Pillars

Research

CHB supports rigorous, translational research at the intersection of health and behavior by connecting investigators, educators, clinicians, and community partners across psychology, public health, neuroscience, medicine, social work, data science, and related fields. This collaborative structure expands existing strengths, fosters new partnerships, and supports work with clear relevance to clinical and applied settings while advancing competitive external funding.

Education and Training

CHB supports structured training and mentorship with an emphasis on experiential engagement, including hands-on research experiences in affiliate labs, the Syracuse University Veteran and Military Learning Scholars Program (SU-VMLSP), and emerging initiatives such as the Veterans Health Scholars Program, which is focused on preparing trainees for careers in VA and other veteran-serving organizations.

Community Engagement

CHB works with healthcare systems, public agencies, and community organizations to support translational research and applied scholarship. Partnerships include SUNY Upstate Medical University, the VA Center for Integrated Healthcare, Crouse Hospital, Clear Path for Veterans, and other local and regional organizations, creating opportunities to align research with practice, support engagement and recruitment, and translate evidence into training, programs, and resources.

Technology and Innovation

CHB affiliates use emerging technologies to study and improve health, including mobile health platforms, ecological momentary assessment (EMA), wearable and biometric monitoring, digital phenotyping, and virtual intervention delivery. This work also includes AI-informed tools, alongside precision approaches such as personalized feedback interventions (PFIs) and just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs), with appropriate safeguards for privacy and bias.
