Excellence in Research Coordination Award
The Excellence in Research Coordination Award recognizes individuals who demonstrate professionalism, initiative, and sustained excellence in coordinating research projects.

Eligibility

  • Must have served in a research coordination or project management role for at least 6 months, preferably in a compensated position.
  • Titles may vary (e.g., Project Manager, Clinical Research Professional, Research Assistant, Research Associate, Lab Manager), but nominees must play a central role in ensuring projects are well organized, effectively managed, and successfully executed.
  • Exhibits initiative, leadership, and reliability that contribute to research productivity and team success.
  • Undergraduate or graduate students RAs and short-term volunteers are not eligible.

Award

  • Recognition certificate of award
  • $100 Amazon gift card
  • Feature in the CHB newsletter and on the website

Nomination Process

Nominations are accepted on a rolling basis and should be submitted by supervising faculty or staff affiliates via email to CHB@syr.edu (with “Excellence in Research Coordination Award” in the subject line).

Each nomination must include:

  • A brief (150-300 word) description of the nominee’s role and contributions
  • Confirmation of service duration

Planned Awards

Overview
The CHB Pilot Grant Award Program offers competitive funding to CHB Affiliates to support innovative research related to health and behavior. This program is designed to help generate preliminary data, strengthen collaborative research, and promote early-career development. Each application must include a clear plan for use of funds. Awardees are expected to acknowledge CHB support in all presentations and publications resulting from the funded project.

Collaborative Interdisciplinary Pilot Award
Supports pilot projects that involve collaboration between faculty from at least two different departments, colleges, institutes, or similar units. Proposals must demonstrate meaningful engagement across distinct academic or institutional boundaries.

Individual Pilot Award
Provides support for projects led by individual faculty members or postdoctoral trainees. Projects should align with the Center’s mission in health and behavior and help investigators develop their research portfolios through preliminary data collection.

Veteran and Military Populations Pilot Award
Supports pilot research focused on the health and behavior of veteran and military populations. Projects may address physical or mental health, health equity, or related behavioral outcomes among veterans, service members, or military-connected families.

Student and Trainee Awards Program

Overview
The CHB Student and Trainee Awards Program supports and recognizes outstanding research and community engagement in health and behavior. By offering awards that can be listed on academic CVs, the program fosters early career development and encourages recipients to acknowledge CHB support on posters, presentations, and other scholarly work. Eligibility is limited to students and trainees working with CHB-affiliated faculty.

Research Excellence Award
Recognizes outstanding research addressing broad issues in health and behavior. This award honors projects that investigate mechanisms, processes, or interventions across a range of topics including health, well-being, resilience, and coping.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration Award
Recognizes research that integrates concepts, techniques, or perspectives from multiple disciplines, advancing a more holistic understanding of health and behavior.

Thesis and Dissertation Awards
Acknowledges significant academic milestones with separate recognition for undergraduate and graduate-level work.

  • Undergraduate Thesis or Independent Research Award: Honors exceptional independent projects or first-author papers by undergraduate students.
  • Graduate Thesis or Dissertation Award: Recognizes major milestones in thesis or dissertation research and celebrates scholarly rigor and innovation in the study of health and behavior.

Travel Awards
Provides partial financial support to help offset the costs of attending academic conferences and professional meetings where students and trainees present their research in health and behavior.

  • Award amounts will be determined based on available funds and are intended to help cover expenses such as registration fees, transportation, or lodging.
  • Eligibility is limited to students and trainees working with CHB-affiliated faculty who are presenting their work at relevant conferences or meetings.
  • Recipients are expected to acknowledge CHB support on all conference materials, including posters and presentations.
